Thirty Plus Years of Great Tastes and Greater Impact
What started as a grassroots idea has grown into one of Northern Nevada's most beloved community traditions. Here's how it happened—and why it matters.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
The Story of
Taste of Downtown
In 1995, downtown Carson City was in the early stages of a revival. Small businesses were returning to once-quiet streets, and local restaurants were beginning to carve out something special. It was at this moment — after discovering a gourmet gem tucked into the back of a local bar — that the idea for Taste of Downtown was born.
The vision was simple: bring the community together around great food and use the energy of that gathering to support survivors of domestic violence. The very first Taste sold 500 tickets, featured seven restaurants, and had one band keeping the night alive. It was a hit from the start.
THE GROWTH
From 500 Tickets to Carson City's Signature Event
Over three decades, Taste of Downtown has grown into something far bigger than anyone imagined. Today, the event draws thousands of attendees, local and out of the area, features over 30 local restaurants, and showcases multiple stages of live entertainment across downtown Carson Street.
The impact of that growth has been just as significant. Thanks to the support of restaurants, local businesses, and a loyal community of attendees, Advocates to End Domestic Violence has been able to expand its life-saving programs, build a new shelter, open a new Classy Seconds Thrift Shop, and establish dedicated office space for its team.
ABOUT ADVOCATES TO END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The Cause Behind the Celebration
Advocates to End Domestic Violence (AEDV) is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1979 by two women who had survived domestic violence and saw a gap in services for families in Carson City. What began as a two-bedroom apartment has grown into a full-service agency operating a 40-bed shelter and offering a wide range of services for survivors and their children.
AEDV believes every individual and family deserves a life free from violence. Their programs are designed to empower survivors to reclaim their lives — and to protect the next generation from the cycle of abuse. AEDV Court Advocates offers victims information regarding options for resources and helps them navigate the judicial processes involved with domestic violence.
SARA PROGRAM
Sexual Assault Response Advocates (SARA)
When a volunteer was sitting with a domestic violence survivor at Carson Tahoe Hospital, that single moment of compassion sparked the creation of SARA — the Sexual Assault Response Advocates program, formally launched in 1993.
SARA's mission is to provide comfort, support, and education to victims of sexual assault, their families, and the broader community.
